What is a Native Plant?
Native plants are those species which grew naturally in Ontario prior to European settlement. Over millennia they adapted to local conditions and coexisted in functioning ecosystems. However, during settlement many exotic species of plants were introduced which, along with the clearing and disturbance of large areas of land, resulted in widespread disruption of natural ecosystems. Today, many of these exotic plants persist and aggressively outcompete native plants on the landscape. In time this has led to a relatively small number of exotic plants outcompeting a larger diversity of native species resulting in an overall decline in plant and animal biodiversity.

Why Native Plants?
Native plants are adapted to local environmental conditions. Not only does this allow them to survive our local extremes in temperature and precipitation but also means they are much less susceptible to insect infestations and damage from diseases. Most native plants, once established, require little supplemental care. This translates directly to savings in time, labor, water and money!

Native plants also benefit the landscape as a whole by increasing local biodiversity, providing food and shelter for wildlife, reducing the input of pesticide and fertilizers into the environment, and bringing a unique aesthetic to the landscape - a breath of fresh air from the repeated theme of bedding annuals.

Aren’t Native Plants ‘Weeds’?
A common misconception is that gardening with native plants will result in a ‘weed patch’ or messy looking garden. The truth is you can landscape with native plants the same way you landscape now. Its all about your vision and proper plant selection. Just as you have probably experienced aggressive cultivated plants (e.g. Lily-of-the-Valley, Mint) there are aggressive species of native plants. However, many species are well-behaved and perform favorably in an urban garden setting. Coreopsis can customize your landscape with proper plant selection and placement. You can achieve a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape with native plants!
